My class of third graders continues to devour the books in our classroom library but they are quickly reading through the collection. This donation will support their continued growth in reading comprehension and challenge them to read new genres. As my students read, I conference with them and ask questions of them to ensure that they understand the text they are reading. I encourage my students to choose books that they find interesting and to ask themselves, "Why am I reading this particular book?" When my students finish a book from our classroom library, I ask them to complete a book report so that I can check for understanding and so that each student can recommend a great book to a peer. My girls love to "book shop" and this donation will help continue to build their reading capacity. It is through exposure, practice, discussions and sharing that we refine our existing reading skills. By building a diverse library of texts, my students will be able to practice the skills necessary for fluent reading as well as to develop and cultivate a life-long love of reading. I can't wait to see which books they will choose to read first!
