Students never cease to amaze me as they go through their kindergarten year. Their growth is astronomical, and they are eager to learn anything and everything. As our curriculum has changed, so has the kindergarten experience. More often than not, students are expected to sit for extended amounts of time. Recess becomes shorter and classroom workload is increased. Students are not getting the amount of movement they need throughout the day and their academics suffer because of it. As we spend more time in the classroom, we need more opportunities for students to wiggle, move, and use their muscle groups to allow for better learning and retention. Brain research confirms that physical activity can enhance the learning process. When the body is engaged, the brain in engaged. Flexible seating allows students to engage the body while using excess energy, improving metabolism, increasing student motivation and engagement, allowing better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and posture. Through the use of wobble chairs, yoga balls, floor pillows, and balance disks my students will be given choices for sitting and movement instead of an assigned seat at a desk. They will be given choice, allowed movement, and given responsibility for their learning.
