Around 55% of all academic vocabulary comes from Social Studies. About 95% of my students struggle with Social Studies Vocabulary because it is too unfamiliar to them. Of that 95%, at least 80% speak a language other than English at home. I teach World Geography and US History to a dedicated group of students who are eager to learn. Many of my students are visual learners. For them being able to see a fjord and tell the difference from a river valley speaks volumes with thirty Oxford Illustrated Social Studies Dictionaries. With education in Oklahoma taking the biggest cut, this will be one more tool for my students to use to be successful.
