My school consists of 90 to 95% English Learners. It sits smack in the middle of Chinatown. Its population is English Learners, mainly from Southern China. Most of the school's families live within vicinity and are non-English speakers. Therefore, living amongst their native speaking community provides a comfort zone for them. Most of my kindergarten group have been brought up by their grandparents while their parents are focused on working hard to build a life in the US. Often, their parents are not home to help the kindergartners with homework. Some of the students attend after school child care programs with homework help. But, once they go home, they do not have the support and some are not able to complete their homework daily.
