We have a very diverse population here in our first grade classroom. We have a very high poverty rate, we come from many different cultures and speak many languages including Spanish. Our parents work hard to provide for their kids, but often times fall short. We have a backpack food program that gives kids that qualify a bag of food on Fridays to take home and eat over the weekend when school meals are not an option. Many of our kids look forward to Fridays for this reason. Our rural community is kept alive with a packing house. This means our parents work all shifts and times of day. Most kids go to babysitters before and after school. Our kids are responsible to get themselves up, dressed and to the bus stop as young as kindergarteners.
