While finishing my M.S. of Curriculum and Instruction, I researched ways of improving math fact fluency while decreasing math timing anxiety. One of the research-based methods that caught my attention was the use of games to help teach math facts. Math games were found to help build not only automaticity (fact fluency), but also increase number-sense, and retention of the foundational math facts. Real understanding in mathematics only occurs when students become playful in their approach to solving problems, not by simply regurgitating and applying algorithms. The Math for Love Prime Climb game will help my students deepen their math fact fluency, and help them become playful in their approaches to problem solving. This will have a bonus of decreasing math-anxiety, and help students to develop an appreciation and love of mathematics.
