Valerio Elementary School serves a large population of children from low socio-economic backgrounds. In addition, we have a preschool that enrolls at least 60 children, ages 3 - 5, with disabilities. The majority of these children have Autism and have intense sensory needs. Just like children with typical development, these children need to have hands-on learning experiences. At this time, we do not have the funds to provide some of the most basic playground equipment for the students, such as a sandbox. Our curriculum requires a minimum of five hours a week outside, where we create a learning environment that continues to teach social, language, cognitive and physical skills through outdoor play. In addition, many of our children need breaks, or sensory stimulation, throughout the day, and may require them to utilize the outdoor play equipment to satisfy their needs.
