Over 85% of our students live below the poverty line. Many students have chaotic home lives, and our first priority is to make sure that school is a safe and supportive place for them. Their lives are also very insular, and another staff priority is to expose our students to the outside world. Because we have always been a smaller, neighborhood school, we have students who are the second or third generation in their families to attend our school. We expanded to a K-8 school several years ago, which has resulted in the unique situation of having not only siblings, but cousins, aunts and uncles simultaneously attending the same school. In addition, we have staff members (and our nurse) who have been at our school for over 25 years. All of this contributes to the "family" feeling of our school, and a heightened sense of intimacy between faculty and students.
