Students will development their narrative and informational reading and writing and critical thinking skills through the critically acclaimed and best selling book Just Mercy written by Bryan Stevenson. This YA adaption of Stevenson's book is sure to engage our students, while also helping them to develop their literacy skills. One of the biggest complaints that we hear is that our core texts we read together in class are "old." While the students come to understand the time and cultural relevance of classic literature, they struggle to find relevancy of those books for current times. They are not wrong. With Just Mercy, not only will we be able to focus on developing the reading and writing skills of our students, but this non-fiction book will also give our students the current social relevancy we know they need.
