There are 13 students who have signed up to play tennis this year, with a combination of boys and girls. The students who come to play tennis are eager to learn, and excited to play. We have the spirit needed for the game, but no equipment. This year every uniform, racket, and tennis ball will have to be purchased out of my own pocket. Tennis is a sport that gets inside you, and makes you want to play. This position that I am in is such an interesting one. I can teach the game, I can inspire others to love it, but I can’t accomplish my goals without equipment. My students attend a school where football and basketball get the funding needed, while tennis is put on the back burner. Our budget for the season went from $2200 to $250, which is not enough to buy practice balls for us. Most of the kids want to learn the sport, but lack the economic ability to purchase the required equipment in order to play.
