Our students have tremendous potential, yet, they share similar learning characteristics and challenges. Because our community is under-resourced and is in crisis. Studies shows that 10-15% of our students with serious reading problems will eventually drop out of school. The first few years of school, my goal is to teach children to read. After third grade, the goal is for children to use their reading comprehension skills to learn new materials. Research shows that reading abilities in third grade act as a tell-tale barometer for later school success. My School is an elementary-intermediate school with 510 students from grade preK through grade 8. The school population comprises 73% Black, 25% Hispanic, 2% other. The student body includes 12% English Language Learners and 21% Special Education students. Boys account for 51% and girls account for 49% of the students enrolled.
