My school is an inner city school with 100% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch. Currently, our school is made up of 530 students. Of the 530 students over 300 are English Language Learners. We have a high number of Nepali and Spanish speaking students. In addition, 25% of our school population is considered to be homeless. In my classroom, I have 24 eager to learn students. English language learners make up 50% of my class, 10% of students' are special education learners, and 1 student is hard of hearing. As a result of students low socioeconomic status-many learners have gaps in education and high mobility rates. Although faced with many challenges and obstacles my students are held to high expectations regardless of home situations. These students LOVE coming to school for the safety and structured learning environments we provide. We not only help to meet their basic needs but we do everything we can to make learning fun and hands on.
