A lot of elementary education is helping a child learn to read, but that does not mean students know or can afford all of the options available to them. Although the school library is an important aspect, I believe every classroom should have interesting books for the students to utilize. I want my own classroom library to be the heart of my classroom to give my literature-loving students the chance to grow. These books will allow us to start on-level book clubs so our students will be able to take control of their own learning while exploring new subjects and developing upper-level literacy skills. Fifth grade is when they begin to learn about American history, so I want to combine subjects to help make history come alive. With these books, students will be able to read about fifth grade subjects on their own reading level to both improve their literacy and comprehension. Book clubs will allow our students to not only develop literacy and history knowledge, but also they will allow for the development of social skills, responsibility, and collaboration as they work together to discuss and fulfill their roles. My students have already shown an astonishing interest in the few library books I have; this project will allow them to increase their options while getting excited about reading.
