We use books to help us create and support our classroom community. Throughout the school year, we use stories to help make big ideas accessible and to work through such topics as acceptance, cooperation, and kindness. Books act as both mirrors and windows -- they allow children to see themselves represented and to learn about people different from themselves. Unfortunately, many classroom libraries do not reflect the diversity of the classroom. By adding these books to my library, I hope to have a more accurate representation of the students in my classroom, as well as a way for them to learn about each other.
