My design and modeling and type III SEM project students are introduced into the world of making and the concept of design process through two avenues. Through the avatar and personal design projects which allow them to express their identities and creative spirit and through the ankle foot orthosis and design solution projects that require them to solve real world problems. In all the projects, students are required to create a prototype or a model that represents the computer aided design they have created as part of their project. In addition to the materials, they gather from home and supplied in class, they had been able to 3d print a portion or all their 3D model using an old MakerBot 3d printer. It is increasingly getting difficult to maintain the 3d printer in working order. As enrollment in the classes is getting larger, it is getting more difficult to engage all students fully in the 3d printing process. Getting these two new 3d printers will alleviate the problem.
