I teach ESOL in a Title I school in South Carolina. I have over 110 students that I monitor and teach to improve second language literacy. Many of these students are the second generation of their family to the US. They are missing a huge block of early literacy that many children get. Because of availability of native language literature, many of these students have not been read to in the native language nor the language they hear at school each day. They can speak a language at home that they cannot read. At school, they are taught in a language they are developing. Without proper support it can be very difficult. The joy for me in teaching my students is the fact that they desire to learn and they work very diligently each day!
