Our school is in its fourth year of turnaround, and my 4th graders have been faced with an incredible amount of challenges in their first four years of education. They require individualized instruction that meets them on their level, and brings them to the next. This can prove challenging, though, as my students have gaps in their foundation that can be hard to identify given the high amount of teacher turnover they've experienced previous to me. Thus, it can be challenging to meet students need on a whole-group level, and so much of my instruction is center-based. Students who require further practice with word work, for example, may visit that center 5 times per week, whereas a student who is a fluent reader won't visit that particular center at all, but will visit others. This requires an incredible amount of planning and materials to meet students' needs.
