Promoting kindness, compassion and social action within the community of learners is paramount to insuring a kinder, more compassionate, and civically engaged citizenry for the next 90 years! Most students have had experiences with companion animals. Some of those experiences centered on loss and even cruelty. Others recount positive interactions. During the 2015-2016 school year our 4th graders participated in the Washington Animal Rescue League/Washington Humane Society’s humane education program where students learned the importance of speaking up for those who can’t, reporting animal abuse and properly caring for the animal companions in their homes. During the 2016-2017 school year twelve 5th grade students will have the opportunity to continue their quest to create a kind community for all by participating in a photo project. Through images that they take, students will document the lives of animal companions, and possibly a wild animal or two, in the Whittier community. Students will receive a disposable camera and take photos of animals, and the people who love and care for them, in their community as well as at the neighboring animal shelter. Once the photos are developed students will have the opportunity to select four images to be enlarged (two 8 x10 and two 5 x7) and placed in a school-wide exhibition as part of the school’s 90th birthday celebration. The exhibit will kick-off with a cookie and juice reception where families, friends, and other community members will have the opportunity to view the exhibit. The program will give children an opportunity to create art while exploring their surroundings and feelings toward animals. The expectation is that the photos will run the gamut of emotions from happy to sad.
