We live in a small community and many of our students have never been to a city larger than Anchorage (about 300,100 people). In fact, to many of our students that is a HUGE metropolis. As such, many things a city offers our students have never encountered. Living in a small community with long cold winters our students love when classrooms are hands on and project based. It keeps us active. My readers love that each month brings a new novel study and projects to connect to standards. With each novel, we find a unique way to compare and contrast with real life. For example, we are currently reading Stone Fox and we brought a real Iditarod racer into our class to compare Willy’s race to a real racer. Our student's can't wait to be journalists and follow/write news articles of our racer as he competes next quarter. We are anthropologists participating in mystery Skype and the great mail race to learn about different regions. More than anything we love to be scientists.
