My school is located in one of the poorer neighborhoods in San Diego County. It is a neighborhood school. Many are second language learners. They come from low socioeconomic families that are struggling to make ends meet. Multiple families may live in the same apartment or house with children sleeping on the couch or floor. Many parents work two or more jobs and are scarcely getting by. During the school week, every child is provided with a minimum of two hot meals a day (school breakfast and school lunch) and our local food bank delivers backpacks of food so that kids will have food for the weekend. Despite these challenges, my students come to school everyday with smiles on their sweet faces and an eagerness to learn.
