My students come from a highly concentrated area of poverty. They come from single family households, living with other individuals, foster homes, and I have one student who is homeless since his house burned down. Our school is the pillar of the community because we ensure our students have a safe place to come learn. Students are provided with intervention, social-emotional support, and a backpack program that provides food to the neediest students. Resources are limited so there is not always enough to provide opportunities for all students. My students are incredible. I would never have thought they lived in such horrid conditions because they are positive and eager to learn. They have little access to books, technology, and materials needed to do work at school and home. On a positive note, they are respectful and very careful with the all the classroom resources we use on a daily basis. I couldn't ask for a better group who have conditions I never experienced before in my life.
