My students have a variety of learning styles and mathematical strengths. We are not a Title I school so students remain in the class for academic instruction. Our class has 28 students, some of which are still acquiring the foundational skills for success in math concepts while others have a strong foundation and need to be challenged and provided opportunities to expand on this knowledge. We do not have a set math program to utilize for daily instruction so I incorporate math centers to differentiate learning. Students work with buddies, complete independent tasks to enhance and practice skills and work in small groups throughout the week. My goal as a teacher is to expose the students to a variety of learning opportunities in which they are engaged and actively learning. I am lacking some of the tools that I need to provide visual learning support for my students. Studies show that manipulatives can improve students' math knowledge significantly.
