This project that I am working on is an after-school program called "The Jaguar Strummers" for which so many students in 4th-6th Grade will be able to sign up. This program is all based around the pedagogy of "Music as a Second Language". In this program, you don't have to know how to read music and you don't really need to learn it either. You learn by playing, listening, and creating, and in this case, we will be doing that through the ukulele! There is a strong emphasis on improvising in this program, giving the students a chance to use what they do know (through playing and listening) to create their own music. At the end of the program, the students will have a chance to perform covers of songs that they have learned as well as their own original music. The overall end goal is to make music and to have fun doing it!
