In my class, I emphasize the process of doing mathematics through group work and analyzing different methods of solving problems. Some of my students are not always convinced that they can be successful in math. Some students are gradually shifting their mindsets away from “just getting the right answer,” to valuing the problem solving process. While many students are willing to take on challenges, my goal is to convince every student that he or she can be successful at math and make valuable mathematical contributions to our classroom. My students are from very diverse backgrounds, both racially/ethnically and socio-economically. The student body is comprised of around 30% African American, 30% Asian American, 20% Latino and 10% White students. My students have various and unique mathematical strengths. I hope to provide students with opportunities to recognize their own strengths, and build their math skills that will be critical to them in high school, college and their careers.
