The students at my school are predominantly African American. Most come from a low socioeconomic status, if not poverty. A lot of the parents cannot afford preschool, so most of the time this means I'm getting a class full of 25 blank slates. They have no background knowledge of letters, sounds, numbers, counting, or even picking up a pencil to write their names.
