All of my students want to learn to play and make friends. This task is sometimes very difficult for them. Learning appropriate social skills and how to react to others doesn't come naturally to them. It's something that has to be directly taught. My unique population of students often lack appropriate social skills like patience, focus, attention, making eye contact, communication, negotiation, accepting a loss, praising a win, and taking turns. Playing games is a fun way to help them to learn and practice these appropriate social skills in a small group setting. By learning these skills in our classroom they will learn to apply these skills in other areas of their life to help build friendships; such as carrying over into their inclusion classes like PE, music, and working with a partner. The great things about games are that we are targeting other learning aspects like critical thinking, problem-solving, logic and reasoning skills, spatial skills, and you can easily adapt these games to learn math and reading skills.
