Having a Wellness Room will give our students a safe and supportive space to learn self-regulation and coping skills. Students are asked to focus on academics while at school, but oftentimes their minds are cluttered with outside stressors. A Wellness Room will provide our students with adult support who will help students manage their social-emotional wellbeing. Middle school students are facing unprecedented challenges and we are seeing an increase in anxiety, depression, self-harm, and unhealthy relationships. All affect how they perform in the classroom. They want to do well, but many are unable to put into words "why" they are struggling and don't know how to regulate their thoughts and emotions. They just know they aren't hearing a word their teacher is saying or don't understand what is expected of them. Our goal at Lake Mountain is to keep students in the classroom. If they need to leave class we work to get them back as soon as possible. Self-regulation and coping strategies are being taught. However, there are times when students need to take a break. This Wellness Room gives our students a safe space to mentally and emotionally recharge and practice self-regulation skills so they can concentrate in class and achieve their educational goals.
