My students come from the government housing projects in East Los Angeles. They are scoring in the 1st band on the new state standardized test. However, many of them are strong, hard working students that should not be scoring so low. On the 1st week of school, I tried to get them to sign-on to Khan Academy, and Typingweb, but it took almost two weeks to finally get all my twenty-four students signed up. The computers in my class are old and the mice are non-functioning. The students didn't know how to type Khan Academy on the web address line. Some didn't even know how to turn the computers on, and since the computer takes so long to start-up, they thought that they were broken. I've been teaching for 17 years and this school has failed the children in terms of their access to technology. Even if the students can worked at grade level using textbooks, pencil and paper, they will not be able to compete for college or careers without at least a basic understanding of technology.
