An average day in my class is reading intensive from the start. We begin looking at books and learning to read from day one. As a result, my students soon learn to love reading and are excited to see their progress. We celebrate together each and every student's success on a daily basis. Having a variety of texts, especially non-fiction texts will enable my students to expand their world and learn about things they have never seen or heard of before. I love when they come to me and ask if I knew that spiders make webs or bats live in caves. Of course I always act as though they are teaching me something new. Graphic novels such as the Dog Man and Monkey Me series are also a wonderful way to allow first grade students to become familiar with chapter books. They cannot wait to be able to read these books as they move along in their progress.
