Hello I have 23 little amazing Kindergarten learners. I love my job and look forward to seeing all 23 faces everyday! Part of my job is to provide my Kindergarteners with hands on activities to connect meaning to their learning. While we have a lot of academic learning taking place in Kindergarten, social and emotional learning has to be taught and practiced before academic learning can take place.
Many children are exposed to various social and emotional self-regulation techniques within their family unit, but many come to school without them. When a child is missing one of these imperative skills it is my job to teach them the skill they are missing.
Already at this young age, so many of my students come from a background involving some kind of trauma. This makes it difficult for learning to take place. Research has shown that trauma actually changes how a child’s brain develops causing these students to be in a consistent flight or fight mode making it difficult for them to self regulate. The number of students entering Kindergarten struggling with this is on the rise and part of my job is to make them feel safe and teach them self- regulation skills that they can continue use throughout their life. In my search to find the best way to support these kiddos I have talked with other teachers as well as some Occupational Therapists. In today’s market there are so many tools/products geared toward supporting these struggling learners.
