In a class of 35 students of all different English ability levels, I am only one teacher. My students range from being completely illiterate, even in their own language, to not knowing any names of the letters of the English alphabet, to being able to read and comprehend simple passages. There are many great free Web sites as well as paid sites and applications that can help students learn at their own pace. The Chromebooks would allow students to access resources which will be specific to their ability. Without the proper resources how can we close the educational gap? The students that do not know any English can learn letter names, sounds and phonics because they will be able to hear the sounds of the letters and speak back to a computer program. The Chromebooks will allow them to have a personalized plan while I am working with other students. During the period students could then switch groups, and I can work with a different set of students while others use the Chromebooks. In addition to an individualized approach, the Chromebooks are exciting for students who may not have access to a computer anywhere else. In addition to helping them lean English, this will allow them to learn valuable computer skills which will benefit them far beyond high school.
