Being able to engage in Literature Circles will not only increase my students' reading, writing, and collaborative discussion skills. It also has the power to positively impact their life outside of school and with their peers. Students will do independent reading of the novel each week, while certain parts are "highlighted" in class. Students will have a Literature Circle group that they discuss the chapters with every Friday. In their circles, they will have specific roles that they rotate each week that support various reading strategies and will be asked higher level thinking questions that they can discuss and debate in a structured and healthy manner. I will also be able to use the novel Slam! to supplement the Standards we are learning about in our Unit. Students will engage in a completely student-led, powerful discussion activity where they are learning and having fun.
