My students at two rural, mountain schools are eager to experience hands-on activities. My art classes provide this opportunity. My schools contain 380 mostly Caucasian students, but we see more diversity with each year; new students to our schools are of different ethnic backgrounds. The largest manufacturing plants left the area and jobs are scarce. More families are leaving than entering our county. Many parents list self-employed. Our students have approximately 75% free and reduced lunches and our child nutrition department provides free breakfast to all students and "back pack buddies" for weekend food for many students and their families. While our families' situations seem dismal, the students are well behaved and respectful. We have very little student substance abuse and almost no violence in our school. They take pride in their corner of the world and are the coolest kids I have ever known.
