The school is made up of about 1200 students, which also includes deaf and hard of hearing students, hence the heightened curiosity. There is a great mix of grade level, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and even why they chose to take the class. Quite a few students have deaf relatives, and want a better way to communicate, using ASL. Some will go on to become teachers for deaf and hard of hearing students or interpreters, while others are taking it to earn foreign language credit or simply because it peaked their interest. Many have found themselves having conversations with deaf and hard of hearing students within our building or individuals while out shopping or having dinner, which is exciting to see and hear. They are compassionate, eager, and hard working kids. These books will enhance their cultural perspective in the Deaf Community, and will give them a broader understanding of what it is like to have experiences as a person with hearing loss, regardless of degree.
