My students are 7th graders at Madison Park Business and Arts Academy in deep East Oakland. I currently serve around 130 students as their math teacher. Most of my students are Spanish speakers and come from low-income homes. Today about half of my students in my 2nd period revealed that they know someone who has been negatively affected by gun violence. My students deal with very real world issues everyday in Oakland and Madison Park Academy attempts to provide a space for them to learn about the world and focus on themselves and their future. The realities of their environment influence their academics, but funding should not be another issue I face as we navigate through math material.
