My students are respectful and caring. They have a desire to learn, but don't always have the tools to attack difficult texts because they don't practice "real reading" beyond what we, as teachers, require of them. They lack the interest and love for reading that I am desperately trying to foster. One of my biggest challenges is sparking my students' interest to read without being required to.
