With new graduation requirements for students with disabilities, more of these students must remain in school for up to 3 years longer than their mainstream peers in order to complete the graduation or completion requirements. One problem with this is that schools tend to run out of appropriate and engaging courses and electives before these students graduate or age-out. However, the digital age is upon us, and there is so much for students to learn that will benefit them in life and possible careers. Additional computer classes, therefore, become increasingly important. Students, though, are not truly engaged after multiple periods of classes that, to them, seem all-too similar. The iPads requested in this project will be paired with OSMO learning systems. With the iPads and OSMO learning systems, students with disabilities, particularly students with autism spectrum disorders will have the opportunity to acquire STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills as well as support language, socialization, vocabulary, phonics, eye-hand coordination, and other fine motor skills in a fun and unique manner. Presenting this technology in a novel manner will help to engage and maintain student attention. Several of the lessons in the curriculum call for teams or small groups, encouraging socialization, cooperation, and communication as well.
