My students attend a public school in California. We have various ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds and different learning needs. Since our school does not qualify for special funding, we rely heavily on donations for funding or from teachers' own paychecks for supplies and books. Using mentor texts is an established best practice for Reading and Writing Workshop. All of my students are curious, eager learners. As a community we believe in caring for others and our environment and we strive to promote lifelong learning. I have a group of eager 3rd graders who love to read. They have a thirst to expand their vocabulary and are already showing me that they love writing. My favorite part of our day is watching their eyes light up as we read the mentor texts. They love hearing the new books and they also enjoy trying to write in the new style we are learning. I want the opportunity to continue our study of mentor texts through these picture books so I can continue to inspire!
