Our elementary school is located within an urban community. My students come from diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods. As a school, we strive to create a welcoming community, which fosters strong family relationships. My special education students need extra support in appointed areas to become more successful as learners and individuals. Knowing this, we hold many workshops and events to collaborate with our families around creating greater student success both in and out of the school. Last year, it became more evident to staff and families that our students may benefit from more strategies around self-regulation. We collaborated with our counseling clinic to gain more insight around how we could infuse our school with more opportunities for students to identify feelings and coping skills. We explored the powerful effect of sensory spaces within schools. We are determined to begin the practice and offer such opportunities to our struggling students!
