When speaking to adults, most will admit the skill they wish they had learned was how to read music. My students are eager to learn just that. Their determination has led to the creation of a new class here in their school, bringing the joy of playing piano right to their fingertips. The one problem is we are missing quite a few piano keyboards. At this time, we only have five keyboards available for student use. With keyboards, students will be given opportunities to read music to enhance their literacy, practice performance skills to gain confidence, and challenge their creativity with composition. Students will hone their analytical skills by critiquing and helping classmates, gain trust and build camaraderie with fellow student performers. As they progress, they will work on teamwork and build their musicianship skills through partnered and group work on the pianos. The ability to utilize keyboards will encourage even the most reticent of performers, allowing students to practice and work at their own pace until they finally have the confidence to perform for their peers.
