My students are between the ages of 11 and 13. The majority of my student population is from the Dominican Republic but we have children from Argentina, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. Many of our children have never had any formal education in their countries. Many of our families have come to the United States to escape violence and drug related activities in their home countries. These families arrive to New York City wanting to offer their children a better opportunity but not really knowing how to do that other than just immigrating to the United States. That is why many of our students register for school with a back pack but nothing inside. Because the parents themselves were not educated, they do not know what materials are needed to educate their children.
