Our High School is located just outside of Los Angeles City. Our students are 97% hispanic in a title 1 school. 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our students come from a low socioeconomic society where many of them will be the first one in their family to ever go to college. Many have immigrated to the USA from Mexico. We have one of the highest student pregnancy rates in the USA. Our students are hard workers, eager to please, but not very ambitious. We have to give them opportunities and encourage and guide them into trying to reach their potentials to go to college. Many are afraid to leave Los Angeles and their families to go away for college. Our school is an Bell award winning AVID school in which students and their families are supported throughout high school to get into college. Those students who make it through the program and graduate college come back to visit and help our school. In fact many students have come back as teachers, to give back!
