Almost all of my students live in poverty. They come to school with a smile everyday when most people would give up. My students have a desire to do well and they want to succeed in school. None of my students come into my class and say, "I don't want to learn today." I am doing all that I can to help my students not become a statistic. However, the current statistics show that African American, Hispanic and low-income students enter fourth grade two years behind. By the time they reach twelfth grade, they are four years behind. Since all of my students are African American and most of them are low-income, this gap may be even greater.
