These students have a difficult time understanding that there is more to living in the United States than the south side of OKC. This trip, in the past, has shown them not only what else is out there, but how to get there and what to do once you are there. If we want to make them committed and involved citizens, they have to know what they are committing to and where they can be involved. Having them learn how to navigate the city bus system allows them to move freely around the city. There are great activities, causes and programs available in this city. Being able to get there is half the challenge. Having them make decisions about the activities to do when they are in the zoo teaches them to prioritize. We only have so much time to spend there so they have to carefully select what they have time to see. Giving them this opportunity is as important as all of the lessons taught within the walls of the school. This is educational and real-life experience at the same time.
