The students come from very diverse backgrounds. Our school is located in the heart of the city where most of the lower income residents reside. The students blend well with one another and tend to have much pride when it comes to our school. Along with the pride comes a great deal of unity even though there are at least six different ethnic communities that combine to form our school. The student population is at least 90% below the poverty level. I work primarily with the Middle School Students (Grades 7 and 8), but over the years I have developed relationships with the High School Students. In those cases my door remains open to all of the students. Fulfilling the needs of the students and families at my school is one of my primary goals as a school social worker.
