Students have more engagement and success when they like what they are doing. A read-aloud of this spooky novel has interested many struggling readers over the past 5 years at our school. However, it is time for each kid to have access to a copy. Each student will benefit from having a copy of this novel in their hands during class. A typical lesson involves reading aloud and using various comprehension strategies, but also stopping frequently for students to talk -as adult readers often do- when they are interested and want to share with friends. This book has an amazing extra that few other authors provide: passwords that open up videos on the author's blog. Our classroom is set up nicely for large-screen viewing of these short videos. Even students who say they don't like reading are drawn in by this mysterious and surprising story. The most precious thing struggling readers can learn is that books are meant to be fun and interesting. As they gain skills, they gain confidence. Giving my kids a chance to feel successful with reading and happy in class is priceless.
