I teach in a rural school district in western Missouri. I teach algebra 1 and an integrated geometry and algebra 1 class. My students range in age from 14 to 18 years old. My students come from all walks of life. Some are at an advantage and are capable of purchasing necessary supplies for the math classroom. Most are not. I also feel that the value of a calculator has been diminished in our age of technology as all cell phones have one built right in. In my class the students are not allowed to use their phones so I need another way for them to be able to do quick and efficient computation.
