My students are very caring students, who are excited about learning. We all read, "Have you Filled Your Bucket Today?" on the first day of school. They have spent their days filling other people's buckets. I am currently reading "Wonder" by Alan Palacios, as an interactive read-aloud. I teach two fifth grade classes of Language Arts/Social Studies with approximately 40 students total. At the beginning of the year, I did a survey to see what the interest level was on reading. About 70% of my students admitted to not enjoying reading for pleasure or for informational purposes. Teaching through novels and finding books that interest them have been the key. I recently had a parent contact me and state that her son loves the novel, "Frindle", that we are all reading as a class. She says that she has not seen him so engaged in the reading process in many years. This excites me! Next week, students will start literature circles based on their Lexile Level and book interest.
