Our district is lucky enough to have gotten the funding to increase PE in elementary from once a week to twice a week this year. For some of the students, the only time they are active all day is in PE. My students have expressed wanting to set up tournaments and games at recess for football, basketball, and soccer. Unfortunately do not currently have the equipment to set these games up. I love that students are wanting to get active during recess. Without enough equipment students often stand around.
Not only would this equipment help students achieve their 60 minutes of activity recommended, it also helps teach important life skills such as teamwork, interpersonal skills, and cooperation.
Instead of just hanging out talking to friends, this new equipment will help our students to stay active. We are lucky enough to have playground equipment set up but many of the students would like to be more active than playing on the playground equipment. New balls, flags, and pinnies will help us to be able to play games at recess and set up tournaments. Getting students more active at recess will help them be more ready to learn in the afternoon!
