These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create, as well as replace our reading group books that have been loved to death. No longer will students be taking home novels with missing pages, chunks of pages falling out, or torn and ripped covers. My students will fall into rich fictional worlds as they learn how to read, increase their vocabulary, and find joy in the previously mundane. They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will help my students gain valuable reading skills. Covid-19 has had a dramatic impact on my students, especially on their reading. They have lost a lot of what they gained due to online instruction, disruption of school schedules, and the added stress from Covid-19. Over half of my class is reading well below grade level, and access to novels that hold their interest will help bring them up to where they need to be for success.
